But even worse — what does Dolan’s whiny deflecting and excuse-making say about...
– Matt Taibbi, who’s actually being pretty measured about the whole thing.
The past few weeks have made me feel physically ill about going to Catholic school all those years. For some reason it’s much worse in my stomach than it was during the last major wave of revelations.

More self-analysis to do →
The more I watch 30 Rock, the more I have to ask myself why I watch it. I’m not sure if the show has just gone off the rails, or if the ugly parts of it were there in the beginning and I just didn’t notice them, but this essay highlights a lot of the things I’ve been having problems with about enjoying the show.
It’s not that Liz Lemon can’t or shouldn’t be a...

Change of scenery
I moved offices this week. I’m fortunate in that where I work we have real offices with doors, bookshelves and windows. I know that’s a rarity for most white collar people who aren’t lawyers or doctors, but for computer programmers it’s basically unheard of. At big companies you work in a cube farm. If you work for a smaller company, who knows, but I get the impression...

– David Frum, on the Democrats’ health care reform win today.
Honestly, I think Frum’s blowing smoke here. The Democrats have been dealing this bill down since June because a few Republican lawmakers made bipartisan googly-eyes at them. We lost a public option to the Democratic party’s...

Small Town Living
I recently moved from Berkeley to Livermore after getting a job here. According to the US Census, that’s a population downgrade from a city of 102,000 to 83,000. That doesn’t come close to capturing how much different it is. This is the smallest-feeling place I’ve ever been. It’s easy to find solitude when you want it. All the places you’d want to hang out are within...

Feed Me, Atlantic
merlin:
Note 2010-02-28_14-40-08: Context: if you’re arriving here late, the article below was a response to my pal, nostrich’s post about my own lamenting of the recent disappearance of full-content RSS feeds for The Atlantic Monthly’s online-only features. It’s not about how everything in the world has to be free to everybody all the time forever; it is, in my opinion, about trying to...

"Pass left, spit right."
Today I did my first group ride in six years. We rode over the Carquinez Strait twice and through a few of the small towns that cling to its banks. It was gorgeous, so naturally I forgot to bring my camera. I need to add a camera mount like this one to my bike so it’ll all be easier anyway.
Riding in a group and riding alone are completely different. Solo riding is meditative and a hard...

That’s just a colossal failure of food science, the Cheese Nip.

– “The Depressed Person.” Brief Interviews with Hideous Men. David Foster Wallace.
This whole story describes depression so completely it causes flashbacks for me. The tedium, the grinding down, the loss of affect. Not a good time for me to be reading DFW, but hey.
